Together with Greenpeace, we monitored the speeches of 14 leading figures in the Italian political scene to understand if, in the first two weeks of the election campaign, they talked about environmental issues. We examined 14 politicians’ social media posts and their prime-time television speeches in a sample of evening and weekend TV broadcasts to see if the environment had been mentioned in the campaign on TV and social media.
What has emerged is that, despite a summer of great heat and drought emergency, the election campaign for the vote of September 25th, in the words of its main protagonists, has dealt little with the environment, and when it did so, it was often a marginal discourse or strongly related to the debate on solutions to the energy crisis and the bills.
Here a summary of the main results of the monitoring
