The Dossier “The Cutting Look – Knowledge, awareness and perception of Afrophobia and systemic racism in the sectors of health, education and communication” was edited by Paola Barretta and Giuseppe Milazzo, researchers from the Osservatorio di Pavia. Kaha Mohammed Aden (writer), Gloria Coscia (Osservatorio di Pavia), Giulia Peruzzi (Carta di Roma) and Sabika Shah Povia (Carta di Roma) participated in its creation.
The research is part of the CHAMPS project (Champions of Human rights And community Model countering afro-Phobia and Stereotypes), supported by the European Union, which is implemented through the collaboration between Amref Health Africa Italia (lead partner), Arising Africans, CSV Net, Festival Goes Divercity, Le Reseau, Observatory of Pavia and Racism Brutta Storia. Among the general objectives of the project is the contribution to prevent, analyse and address the issue of Afrophobia and Afrophobic languages.
To explore these issues, the Osservatorio di Pavia and Carta di Roma organized six focus groups and fifteen in-depth interviews, whose specific objectives can be summarized as follows: to explore the levels of knowledge, awareness and perception on Afrophobia and systemic discrimination against Africans or Afro-descendants in Italy. Investigate the phenomenon in its manifestations in different areas of daily life, in particular in relation to three key working sectors: education, health and communication. Identify possible actions to combat Afrophobia, racism and discrimination, and eventually existing good practices.
